Getting a Category D1 minibus licence requires a number of tests and meeting RSA requirements. Minibus driving lessons are not legally required, but professional training is strongly recommended due to the high standard required for the RSA Category D1 driving test. Lessons provide structured training to help drivers reach the required level of competence before taking the test.
At ISM, we provide Minibus lessons to help learners begin their journey towards becoming qualified drivers. Below, we explain whether lessons are required and answer key questions about the process.
Are Minibus Driving Lessons Required?
To meet the requirements of a minibus licence, learners need to pass the Category D1 driving test, which assesses a high level of skill, responsibility, and road awareness. Lessons are key to developing the required standard, helping learners build confidence and perform safely and consistently on test day.
They replicate real driving conditions, giving learners valuable experience in a controlled environment where mistakes can be identified, corrected, and improved over time. Lessons focus on essential areas such as safe driving, strong vehicle control, road awareness, and the ability to complete manoeuvres – all of which are central to meeting the test requirements.
How Many Minibus Lessons Do I Need?
The number of lessons recommended depends on your experience, confidence, and ability to meet RSA test standards. The aim is to become a safe minibus driver and D1 licence holder. At ISM, we offer a structured 6-hour training course (3 × 2-hour sessions), including vehicle use for the driving test and a pre-test session. The total cost is €650, or €700 (subject to change) if the vehicle is also required for the CPC walk-around examination.
What’s Involved in the Category D1 Driving Test?
The Category D1 driving test by RSA is the practical assessment required to obtain a D1 minibus licence. It includes on-road driving on a variety of routes, reversing manoeuvres at the test centre, vehicle safety questions, and a walk-around inspection. These elements assess your ability to drive safely, control the vehicle, and understand essential safety procedures.
Minibus Driver Requirements
A Category D1 licence allows drivers to operate minibuses with between 9 and 16 passenger seats. They must first hold a full Category B (car) licence, then complete the theory test and apply for a D1 learner permit. If you intend to drive professionally or commercially, Driver CPC requirements will also apply, including the CPC case study test.
