What do I need before applying for a Category C1 learner permit, and how do I complete the application?

To apply for a Category C1 learner permit for ambulance driving, you must first pass the Truck Theory Test and, if required, the Driver CPC Case Studies exam. Both exams can be booked at theorytest.ie, and study material is available through the official app, book or disc. You will also need a completed driver medical report before attending your NDLS appointment. Once these steps are completed, you can apply for your C1 learner permit through NDLS.ie, where the fee is €45. Bring your medical report and required identification with you on the day. These steps must be completed before you can begin ambulance C1 driving lessons.

Driver CPC is required if you intend to work professionally in driving roles covered by CPC, such as certain transport or logistics positions. You must complete both the CPC Case Studies theory exam and the Truck Theory Test before progressing to practical elements. When applying for your C1 driving test, you can also apply for your CPC Practical Test (walk-around exam), which focuses on safety knowledge and vehicle checks. If your role in the ambulance or emergency services requires CPC, it must be completed before working professionally.

Learners typically complete a structured programme that includes 6 hours of C1 training (3×2 hours) and a pre-test session on the day of the exam. ISM also provides an option to hire our fully equipped automatic Mercedes Sprinter Ambulance for lessons, pre-test sessions and the CPC walk-around exam. However, the number of lessons you need may vary depending on your experience, confidence and learning pace. Your instructor will continuously assess your progress and let you know when you consistently meet the RSA Category C1 driving test standard. Learners receiving social welfare payments may also be eligible for grant support.

The RSA Category C1 driving test lasts approximately 70 minutes and includes on-road driving across various routes, reversing manoeuvres, structured vehicle safety questions and a full walk-around inspection. These elements are designed to assess your overall competence, safety awareness and control of the ambulance vehicle. The RSA test fee is €120, and the CPC Practical Test (if required) costs €32. Your ISM instructor will prepare you for all components of the assessment, so you understand the expectations for each section.

Learners can complete their C1 ambulance lessons around their work or personal schedule, as ISM offers training on weekdays, evenings and weekends. This flexibility allows learners from emergency services, healthcare backgrounds or shift-based roles to train at times that suit them. Lessons are delivered at the ISM Finglas Training Centre using our fully equipped ambulance training vehicles, ensuring consistent and high-quality instruction.

Once your instructor confirms that you are test-ready, you may book your Category C1 driving test through the RSA. The typical waiting time at the Finglas C1 Test Centre is around 8 weeks, although requesting a cancellation test may offer an earlier appointment. Many learners are able to complete training and test preparation within a short timeframe, depending on their availability and test slot scheduling.

Pre-test C1 lessons take place at the ISM Finglas Training Centre, where instructors focus on the key elements of the C1 test: reversing manoeuvres, cab and safety checks, and route familiarisation. These lessons are recommended shortly before your exam to ensure you feel prepared and confident. After passing your test, new C1 drivers can access job opportunities through the ISM Recruitment Driver Agency, which supports temporary and permanent roles for light truck or Category C1-qualified drivers, depending on industry needs.
