To begin rigid truck (Category C) training, you must first pass the Truck Theory Test and, if required, the CPC Case Studies exam. Both exams can be booked at theorytest.ie. You will also need a completed driver medical report before attending your NDLS appointment. Once these steps are completed, you can apply for your Category C learner permit through NDLS.ie, where the fee is €45. Remember to bring your medical form and required identification on the day. These steps must be completed before you can begin rigid truck lessons with ISM.
Driver CPC is required if you plan to work as a professional truck driver. After completing your Truck Theory Test and CPC Case Studies, you will take the CPC Practical Test (walk-around exam) when applying for your Category C driving test. This practical exam focuses on safety procedures and vehicle checks. If you are not planning to drive professionally, CPC is not required, but most learners completing Category C training eventually progress to CPC to increase employment options in the transport sector.
There is no fixed number of rigid truck lessons required by the RSA. The amount of training depends on your previous driving experience, confidence and familiarity with large vehicles. Your ISM Instructor at the ISM Finglas Training Centre will provide ongoing feedback and assess your progress during each lesson. You will be advised when you consistently demonstrate the driving skills and safety standard needed for the RSA Category C test. Many learners complete a structured training plan that includes pre-test sessions once they are close to test readiness.
Rigid truck lessons are delivered at the ISM Finglas Training Centre because it is located directly beside Dublin’s only RSA HGV Driving Test Centre, making it the most suitable and practical location for preparing for the Category C driving test. The centre provides access to dedicated reversing bays, test-focused manoeuvring space, and direct familiarity with RSA test routes. Training in this environment allows learners to practise essential reversing, safety checks and on-road elements in the same area where the official test is carried out.
The RSA Category C rigid truck driving test lasts approximately 70 minutes. It includes on-road driving across multiple test routes, essential reversing manoeuvres, structured vehicle safety questions and a full walk-around inspection to demonstrate your understanding of truck safety. The test fee is €120, and if you are completing Driver CPC, the CPC Practical Test costs €32. Your ISM Instructor will prepare you for each stage of the assessment so that you understand what to expect on the day.
Rigid Truck lessons are priced at €185 for a 2-hour session, and payment is made at the time of booking. Learners receiving social welfare supports may qualify for funding towards their training through local or national schemes. ISM can advise you on the process and documentation required. Training is delivered using modern, fully insured Category C rigid trucks, maintained to the highest standard for learner safety and comfort.
Once your ISM Instructor confirms that you are ready, you may book your Category C driving test through the RSA. The typical waiting time at the Finglas HGV Test Centre is around 8 weeks, but learners often reduce this by applying for a cancellation test. Many trainees complete their truck lessons, pre-test sessions and RSA test within a few weeks, depending on availability and appointment scheduling.
Pre-test rigid truck lessons are held at the ISM Finglas Training Centre, where instructors focus on test routes, reversing manoeuvres, common driving errors, and the required cab safety checks. These sessions are recommended shortly before your RSA test date to ensure you are fully prepared. After you obtain your Category C licence, ISM can support your employment journey through the ISM Recruitment Driver Agency, which offers temporary and permanent truck driving roles across transport and logistics sectors nationwide.
