First-time learner drivers must complete 12 Essential Driver Training (EDT) lessons with an RSA-approved driving instructor before they can sit their driving test. While 12 EDT lessons are the legal minimum, many learner drivers choose to take additional lessons before their test to further develop their skills and gain more experience on the road.
The number of driving lessons a person needs before their test varies depending on their confidence, previous driving experience, how often they practise between lessons, and how prepared they feel. ISM offers driving lessons to support learners at every stage, including EDT lesson packages, pre-test lessons, and additional driving lessons.
Do You Need to Complete All 12 EDT Lessons Before Your Test?
Learner drivers must complete all 12 Essential Driver Training (EDT) lessons before they are eligible to sit the driving test. EDT is a structured programme of 12 lessons designed by the RSA to introduce and develop the key skills needed for safe driving, including vehicle control, observation, and road awareness. The programme must be completed in full with an RSA-approved driving instructor.
All 12 EDT lessons must be completed and recorded in the official EDT logbook before a learner can apply for and sit the driving test. This ensures learners have covered the required core skills and have built a consistent foundation of safe driving practice.
Additional Driving Lessons
Additional driving lessons are commonly taken after completing EDT to help learners build further experience on the road. These lessons focus on reinforcing core driving skills and giving learners more time to practise a wider range of driving situations, including junctions, roundabouts, traffic conditions, and parking.
They are often used to strengthen overall competence and support steady progress at an individual pace.
Pre-Test Driving Lessons
Pre-test driving lessons are also often taken closer to the driving test and focus specifically on preparation for test conditions. These lessons are used to refine key areas such as observation, positioning, mirror use, and consistency in decision-making.
They also provide an opportunity to address any remaining issues before the test and help learners become familiar with the standard expected during the driving test.
