Automatic driving lessons can be a suitable option for many learner drivers. With fewer vehicle controls to manage, some learners find they can focus more on developing observation, awareness and safe driving habits on the road. The goal of both automatic and manual driving lessons is exactly the same: to help learners become safe, confident drivers and prepare them for real road conditions and the driving test.
At ISM, both automatic and manual driving lessons follow the RSA-approved Essential Driver Training (EDT) curriculum and are delivered by RSA-approved driving instructors to the same professional standard.
RSA-Approved EDT Lessons
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory programme of 12 lessons for learner drivers in Ireland. These lessons follow the RSA-approved EDT curriculum and introduce learners to the key skills, knowledge and behaviours required for safe driving.
EDT provides learners with a structured foundation for driving. However, completing the 12 EDT lessons does not automatically mean a learner is ready to pass their driving test. Every learner develops at a different pace and gains experience at different rates.
Additional Driving Lessons After EDT
Many learners benefit from additional driving lessons after completing their EDT programme. This is normal and often necessary to develop the confidence, judgement and experience required to drive independently and safely.
Additional lessons allow learners to build on the foundations established during EDT, practise more complex driving situations and gain further experience in real road conditions.
Manual and Automatic Driving Lessons
When deciding whether to learn in an automatic or manual vehicle, it is important to consider your future driving needs. Learners who pass their driving test in an automatic vehicle receive a licence that permits them to drive only automatic vehicles. Learners who pass their driving test in a manual vehicle can drive both manual and automatic vehicles.
Many modern hybrid and electric vehicles are automatic, which may make automatic lessons a practical choice for some learners. Others may prefer the flexibility that comes with holding a manual driving licence.
There is no right or wrong choice. The best option is the one that suits your personal circumstances, confidence levels and long-term driving plans.
