How to Become a Bus Driver in Ireland

Becoming a bus driver in Ireland requires you to obtain a Category D driving licence and meet the requirements set by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). The process involves holding a full Category B driving licence, applying for a Category D learner permit, completing the required theory tests and medical requirements, and passing the Category D driving test. Drivers who intend to work professionally in the passenger transport sector must also meet the relevant Driver CPC requirements.

ISM provides Category D bus driving lessons to help learners prepare for the RSA driving test. Training is delivered by qualified instructors at our Finglas Training Centre, using modern training vehicles, to help learners develop the skills and experience needed to prepare for test day.

What Licence Do You Need to Become a Bus Driver?

To drive a bus or coach in Ireland, you must hold a Category D licence. Before applying for a Category D learner permit, you must hold a full Category B driving licence, pass the Bus Theory Test and, where required, the Driver CPC Case Studies examination. You must also have a completed driver medical report before attending your NDLS appointment to apply for your learner permit.

Once your Category D learner permit has been issued, you can begin bus driving lessons and prepare for the RSA Category D driving test. Drivers who intend to drive buses or coaches professionally must also complete the relevant Driver CPC requirements. This is a separate qualification from the Category D driving licence and is required for professional passenger transport roles.

Are Bus Driving Lessons Required?

Bus driving lessons are not a legal requirement before taking the Category D driving test. However, professional training is strongly recommended, as driving a large passenger vehicle requires a high standard of vehicle control, road awareness and safe driving.

The number of lessons needed varies depending on your previous driving experience, confidence and ability to meet the RSA driving test standard. Category D lessons focus on practical driving skills, including on-road driving, reversing manoeuvres, vehicle control, observation, road positioning and passenger safety.

The Category D Driving Test

The RSA Category D driving test assesses whether learners can safely operate a bus in a range of road and traffic conditions. The practical test takes approximately 70 minutes and includes on-road driving, reversing manoeuvres, vehicle safety questions and a walk-around vehicle inspection.

Where Driver CPC is required, learners must also complete the CPC Practical Test (walk-around test), which assesses vehicle safety checks and operational knowledge. ISM instructors prepare learners for every element of the Category D driving test, helping them become familiar with the test routes, manoeuvres and standards expected by the RSA.
