A Category C1 licence allows drivers to operate vehicles with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg. It is based on vehicle weight rather than vehicle purpose. This means it applies to a range of medium-sized vehicles used in commercial and specialist driving roles. This category is most commonly associated with light truck driving. ISM offers Category C1 lessons to support learners preparing for their driving test, with training delivered by qualified instructors at their Finglas training centre.
Light Trucks
The Category C1 licence is commonly associated with light trucks used in transport and delivery work. These vehicles are used to move goods between warehouses, depots, retail premises, and customers, and are commonly operated in logistics, distribution, courier, retail delivery, and furniture delivery roles.
A C1 licence is used in roles where vehicles exceed the weight limit of a standard Category B (car) licence. In these cases, the vehicle weight determines the licence requirement rather than the type of work being carried out.
Ambulance Driving
Certain ambulance vehicles fall within the Category C1 licence range and require a C1 entitlement to be driven. This applies to larger ambulance vehicles with MAM between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg and used in roles such as private ambulance services and patient transport.
As with other C1 vehicles, the licence requirement is based on the vehicle’s weight rather than its purpose. Drivers must hold the correct C1 entitlement for the specific ambulance vehicle they are operating.
Are C1 Lessons Legally Required?
C1 lessons are not a legal requirement in order to take the Category C1 driving test. Learners can apply for a Category C1 learner permit and sit the driving test once they meet the RSA requirements, without completing a set number of professional lessons.
However, lessons are strongly recommended for anyone preparing to drive light trucks or ambulances, as they help develop the skills needed to operate larger, heavier vehicles safely. Many learners choose structured training to gain experience in handling C1 vehicles, improve confidence, and prepare more effectively for test conditions.
Do You Need a CPC with a Category C1 Licence?
A Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is required for most professional driving roles involving a Category C1 licence. This is particularly relevant in transport, logistics, delivery services, and ambulance driving.
The CPC is separate from the driving test and focuses on ongoing professional driving standards and safety requirements. Depending on the role, drivers may need to complete CPC training in addition to obtaining their C1 licence.
